Supporting Healthcare Frontline in Malaysia

With Coronavirus (COVID-19) spreading like wildfire across the globe and taking over the headlines, governments around the world have implemented stay at home measures. Flattening the curve is in all our minds, slowing down and stopping the spread of the virus is critical to not overwhelm our health care system.

In Malaysia the government has implemented “Movement Control Order” (MCO), prohibiting mass movements and gatherings and requesting citizens to stay at home. On the contrary, our healthcare frontlines are in hospitals and clinics, working around the clock and putting their lives at risk trying to save many others. In searching for ways to assist our healthcare community, I stumbled upon a Facebook group dedicated to create and design personal protective equipment (PPE). The group was sharing face shield designs and encouraging anyone who had a 3D printer to create some PPE and donate it to hospitals in Malaysia. I own an Evnovo Sidewinder X1 3D printer and this was the perfect opportunity for me to jump in.A request came up on the Facebook group, a gentleman asking for some face shields for his wife who was working for a private hospital. At the time the priority for the group was to supply PPE to government hospitals first. My supplies of PLA (Polylactic acid) filaments were limited but this was a request I could fulfill, I knew I could help!

I privately messaged him and happily offered my resources and time, but he would have to wait 24hrs. It would be my first printed face shield and I was still tinkering around with the printer to find the most optimum printing time without sacrificing durability. Next day I was able to leave at my front door a couple of face shields for him to pick up. He offered payment but that was not what this was about, I was doing this for the frontline heroes working in the medical fields and this was a way to pay it forward.

I wanted to keep going… I messaged one of my friends through a Whatsapp group chat, a Doctor working for a government hospital. He was in need and I got started right away with another set. I shared the progress with the rest of our group, 20-30 min to print each face shield. Our friends wanted to help too. They did not have a 3D printer but that didn’t stop them. Next thing I knew they were shipping me PLA filaments to print more face shields and send them to the hospitals.

The need for coming together and being a part of something more for all of us is everywhere I look. I casually mentioned to William Houry, Versasec’s VP of Sales what I was doing during my free time. William immediately engaged and brought in our CEO, Joakim Thorén, who offered his support to the cause. At the moment I’m waiting for the next PLA filaments sponsored by Versasec.

As an employee, It’s invigorating and motivating to know that Versasec is supporting the efforts to help my local healthcare community. Versasec is not only committed to the wellbeing of its employees but it also doesn’t hesitate to support the employees in helping the local communities at this time. How cool is that?
