Lots of computer users still don't realize how or even that their personal information is gathered, shared and used. But, as with the law, ignorance isn't an excuse, and companies that don't make every effort to secure and protect their data can find themselves in legal and financial troubles, and with potentially fatal damage to their brand.

That's where Data Privacy Day, led by the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and backed by Versasec partner Yubico as a supporting sponsor, comes in. The goal of Data Privacy Day is "to create awareness about the importance of respecting privacy, safeguarding data and enabling trust."

The Data Privacy Day commemoration, held each year on January 28, began in Europe in recognition of the signing of Convention 108, a legally binding international treaty addressing data protection and privacy. The commemoration first made its way to the U.S. and Canada in 2008.

NCSA's work doesn't stop with Data Privacy Day, however - the group's signature event is just one element in its overall privacy awareness and education efforts. Some of its efforts are aimed at consumers, but others are targeted squarely at organizations and helping them understand how better safeguarding data is good for business. For individual password protection, a company called put together a resource guide about password management that's worth a read:

At Versasec, we too remain focused every day on ensuring our customers are protecting their data. On Data Privacy Day and every other day, no one can afford data breaches: They damage brands, enterprises and relationships. Keeping customer and company data private and secure is possible, affordable and easy by implementing strong multi-factor authentication for everyone accessing corporate data. And, fortunately, we're here to help.

Our vSEC:CMS smart card management product suite provides all the software tools to administer and manage both physical and virtual smart cards in a secure and convenient way. The product suite consists of products that meets every organization's requirements for managing smart cards throughout their lifecycle, from issuance to retirement.

With vSEC:CMS, handling the lifecycle of smart cards is simple. Users are granted access to data only when they have a combination of "something you have" - such as a smart card, and "something you know," such as a PIN or other form of identification, ensuring that even if cards get into the wrong hands, they can't be used. The product is highly flexible and is ideal for medium- to large-scale smart card deployments. vSEC:CMS is a client-server based system where the clients are either operator terminals or user self-service applications. vSEC:CMS is well suited for larger deployments where several operators and users are interacting with the smart card management system in parallel.
