Omegapoint
Case study: Omegapoint
Omegapoint is the leading IT security consulting firm in Sweden with offices in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, Kalmar, Falun and Umeå. Omegapoint has since 2001 been providing its customers with Advisors and Experts in IT/Information Security, Systems Architecture and IT management.
Omegapoint operates mainly in the following business areas: Defense and Public organizations, Healthcare and Pharmaceutical, Bank, Finance and Insurance, Media, Telecom, Automotive and Utilities.
Challenges
Omegapoint AB staff use minidriver enabled smart cards for both logical and physical access. In order to manage the lifecycle of the smart cards Omegapoint AB IT staff had to manually manage the smart cards, storing important security information about the smart cards in files. This was both inefficient and insecure.
The high level of security with all keys located and used on the hardware token and the very fast integration into our systems, makes vSEC:CMS T-Series Token a perfect solution for our needs. /Johan Lund at Omegapoint
Solution
It was decided to look at alternative ways to manage the lifecycle of the smart cards. Leading providers of Smart Card Management Systems (SCMS) were looked at and in the end Omegapoint AB, after careful evaluation, selected the vSEC:CMS T-Series Token from Versasec.
Implementation
The implementation was very straight forward. The vSEC:CMS T-Series Token is preconfigured with the SCMS application residing in the AES encrypted flash storage of the token. Using the built in minidriver smart card, all security keys required by a SCMS are stored in hardware, giving maximum security. As Omegapoint AB had all of the necessary backend systems already in place, it was simply a matter of attaching the vSEC:CMS T-Series USB Token to an IT operators host system to begin managing the staff’s smart cards.

Case study: STW Quedlinburg GmbH
Case study: STW Quedlinburg GmbH
STW Quedlinburg is a power and water supplier owned by the city of Quedlinburg in the state Sachsen-Anhalt in Germany. Using ERP systems, STW Quedlinburg communicates with several other actors in the market. The communication is done using email and the widely adopted EDIFACT standard.
Challenges
German regulations require that business to business communication is secure. The recommended way to secure the communication is to use cryptography to encrypt and digitally sign each message. If a company does not follow these recommendations, the company is regarded as less trustworthy and this can potentially limit the company’s success. Further, if the company’s ERP systems can’t receive the secure message that business partners are sending, then this can potentially hinder doing business together.
The implementation of vSEC:MAIL Server from Versasec was fast and very straight forward. Not only does vSEC:MAIL enable us to communicate securely, it also has improved performance in the system because of vSEC:MAIL’s flexible filter handling. /Herr Brinksmeier, IT Manager at STW Quedlinburg
Most ERP systems have not included support for this secure message communication. The German customers of those ERP systems then have the option to not use secure messages and potentially lose business, change to another ERP system (generally a very costly and with large impact on the day to day business) or find a third party system that can secure the communication.
Solution
By using vSEC:MAIL Server, STW Quedlinburg are now able to secure the outgoing emails and receive incoming secure messages, without changes in the ERP system.
vSEC:MAIL is getting all incoming mails, performs the crypto processing and saves the emails together with a status into a folder that is shared with the ERP system. Outgoing messages the ERP system will drop into a shared folder together with processing information (e.g. receiver address), vSEC:MAIL takes the messages from the shared folder and performs the crypto and sends the emails.

Cantref
Case study: Cantref
Cantref is a housing association in West Wales with 70 employees, a turnover of £5M with over 1400 properties in West Wales. The company is in a rural location with considerable travelling required to service tenants. There is one main office and 5 sub offices.
Challenges
Cantref were looking to implement a solution to control their sensitive client information and obviously took their responsibilities in this area very seriously. Furthermore, they wanted to achieve this whilst also giving greater flexibility of access to their staff. Cantref has both remote and office based Staff some of these had been provided with laptops in the past but this had meant an increased risk of the data being stolen or lost. The solution currently used was one from a competitor that provided authentication to a share-point website and Outlook Web Access. This solution, however, was not providing the full access to all applications used by a user.
We wanted to test the solution before making a final decision with CPS and Versasec. We were able to do this in conjunction with Gemalto products in what was a very open process. /Joseff Harris, Cantref IT Manager
Requirements
With the introduction of Citrix XenApp, Cantref had a solution that would easily allow them this full access and lock the system down by requiring smart card authentication. Various smart card offerings were evaluated with the key search criteria being that the solution needed to be easily manageable, be able to integrate with Citrix XenApp and leave no history of activity on the computer connecting to the Cantref Citrix environment.
Why Versasec, CPS and Gemalto were Selected
Following the evaluation stage, CPS was selected to supply Cantref with the Gemalto .Net cards and the SEG encrypted token managed by Versasec’s vSEC:CMS along with the vSEC:USB to connect to the Citrix environment.
When we started to discuss the requirements in detail with CPS they explained the various additional application and management options for the Gemalto devices. As a result we implemented the Versasec vSEC:CMS to manage our cards and tokens. During the investigation and testing we had complete assistance from CPS and Versasec to ensure that the solutions fully met our needs. Of all the suppliers we deal with, large and small, I would rate CPS and Versasec as joint top, for service, product, support and cost. /Joseff Harris, Cantref IT Manager
Implementation
Joseff Harris, Cantref IT Manager, says: “We wanted to test the solution before making a final decision with CPS and Versasec. We were able to do this in conjunction with Gemalto products in what was a very open process. We were able to communicate directly with technical support at Versasec when required as well as get support from CPS. Additionally, with some recent high profile cases where organisations were fined for not adequately protecting customers’ confidential details from being lost or stolen, the solution provided by Versasec gives us an additional insurance policy against such loss of data. The implementation was on time and our expectations of Versasec and CPS were certainly met.”
Results and Business Benefits
With the new solution, Cantref are now able to give increased access whilst keeping the data physically within the organisation. Furthermore, it has helped them to lower their carbon footprint. Staff have to travel less as they do not need to visit the officeso frequently.
Finally, as staff are used to accessing their applications from a terminal services session when they are out of the office, it has been possible to use thin clients in the office. It is expected that, shortly, the use of PCs and laptops will be almost completely eliminated, thereby lowering costs for equipment and support as well as further reducing the company’s carbon footprint with lower power consumption.

ISSP
Case study: ISSP
ISSP is a leading system integrator in the Ukraine, which is 100 per cent focused upon designing, developing and implementing complex security solutions for corporate IT environments. ISSP uses best in class products from the world-leading vendors and professional services with extensive customer care maintenance and support options to provide its clients with versatile, effective and efficient security solutions.
Challenges
Corporate computers generally are configured to require a form of authentication for logon purposes. User name and password authentication, the most widely used logon security mechanism, is only as infallible as its users. Users often share their personal passwords with friends and work colleagues. Sometimes a user may write a password on a slip of paper and clip it to their computer monitor or keyboard. If a user does not safeguard a password, the network may be subject to concurrent usage of a user account or worse, may be unprotected against malicious break-ins. For these reasons ISSP decided to use smart cards for its employees to logically access their corporate network to increase security and meet the best practice for Windows logon as recommended by Microsoft.
As a professional company extremely focused on information security, we are keen to implement efficient and innovative solutions to secure our own IT environment. That’s why we implemented the vSEC:CMS. /Roman Sologub, General Manager at ISSP
Solution
Using a smart card to perform Windows smart card logon requires that a digital user certificate needs to be issued and stored on the smart card. Also, the security keys of the smart card need to be managed to ensure that the highest level of security is achieved. The smart card chosen was the Gemalto .NET smart card. By selecting the vSEC:CMS S-Series application, ISSP was quickly able to configure the application to connect to the corporate directory and the corporate PKI, allowing the IT smart card administrators to register, issue and manage the employees smart cards in less than 15 minutes. The vSEC:CMS S-Series provides all the functionality required to manage ISSP’s employee smart cards throughout their lifecycle.
Implementation
As a professional company extremely focused on information security, we are keen to implement efficient and innovative solutions to secure our own IT environment. That’s why we implemented the vSEC:CMS – a very innovative solution which allows us to perform daily operations of smart card management processes with optimal time and HR consumption. Based on personal experience I can say that the vSEC:CMS enables us to carry out the maximum benefits from our smart card infrastructure. Swedish Export Credit Corporation
Case study: Swedish Export Credit Corporation
Swedish Export Credit Corporation (SEK), which is 100 per cent owned by the Kingdom of Sweden, provides financial solutions on commercial terms by granting export credits and direct lending to exporters. SEK also administers the state-supported export credit system, CIRR.
Challenges
SEK had decided to use employee badges both for physical access control to the offices and for logical access control to the computer systems. Not only does SEK require high levels of security to secure the sensitive company assets, SEK also saw possibilities to extend the IT services provided to the employees if the security level was elevated.
We successfully managed our employee badges using the vSEC:CMS from Versasec for almost one year now. Recently we decided to upgrade to the brand new S-Edition. This has simplified our processes and enables our IT organization to service the SEK employees both remotely and locally in an efficient fashion. /Stephan Bruus, IT Security Officer at SEK
Solution
The first step was to put in place a PKI. The trust center of the PKI, the certificate authority, was secured with the vSEC:ID Server Key from Versasec. vSEC:ID Server Key makes use of smart cards to secure the root key of the certificate authority. After the PKI was in place, SEK was ready to start the smart card program. The chosen card was the Gemalto .NET card. SEK evaluated different smart card management systems and selected the vSEC:CMS T-Series from Versasec to manage the life cycle of the smart cards.
Implementation
The smart card program has been a success and we are continuously expanding it within our organization. Versasec has assisted us throughout the process, the products are easy to use and the technical support has been impeccable.

SETMA
Case study: SETMA
Southeast Texas Medical Associates (SETMA) is a privately owned consortium of medical professionals dedicated to providing the best medical care to patients, and with a unique commitment to technology.
Unlike many organizations that follow a reactive approach, SETMA anticipates the future of electronic medical record management and patient security and has implemented an innovate set of tools and solutions to stay ahead of the curve.
Challenges
Just as medical offices store paper medical records behind lock and key, SETMA Chief Informational Officer Richmond Holly realized there was a need for stronger access controls to protect their online systems. SETMA was using industry standard user names and passwords to login to the network, but Holly felt this was not enough to protect this critical information. User names and passwords were problematic as they were less secure and cumbersome for the doctors to remember with increasingly longer and more complicated passwords. Holly worried because he suspected some users were writing down or sharing login information – a big security risk. Richard Holly explains:
Security is a big thing for us. The majority of the healthcare industry has been lax in securing networks. Although there is no current regulation that requires two factor authentication, we wanted to lead the way, and go above and beyond what is necessary to protect our patients. /Richmond Holly, Chief Informational Officer
Not only were we using shared logins for all exam rooms, which wasn’t secure, but our physicians still had to use separate user names and passwords to login to various applications every time they went to a new patient room. It was tedious for our staff to remember all the complicated passwords and we didn’t want our patients to see our processes as anything less than seamless.”
Solution
Holly and his team evaluated several solutions, but liked the idea of two-factor authentication – something you have (token or smartcard) paired with something you know (PIN). They chose Gemalto’s IDPrime smartcards for security reasons, but also to improve efficiency and convenience. In addition, it ensures physicians don’t leave a computing device with an open session.
It was easy to deploy smartcards with SETMA’s existing Microsoft environment, making the smartcards easy to deploy and simple to use with no need to install or maintain any extra software or middleware. The smartcards were also integrated with door security at SETMA’s four clinical locations, making a converged badge for physical and logical access. For the management of the smartcards, SETMA chose the vSEC:CMS S-Series application which allowed their IT administrators to quickly deploy digital identities to the smartcards assigned to the staff. Using the vSEC:CMS S-Series application, the complete lifecycle of the smartcards could be managed from one central application.
Using a SETMA physician as an example, here’s how it works:
- Physician uses the smartcard with the contactless physical access control system to enter into the facility.
- The card is attached to a white coat for secure visual identity.
- Physician greets the first patient of the day and enters the smartcard into the shared computer for two factor logical access. Pulls up the patient chart to access medical history and enter information from the visit.
- When the visit is complete, the physician pulls the card from the computer, automatically logging out of the shared resource. The system is disconnected and will only reconnect when a card is inserted and the PIN is entered. However, whatever applications the physician logs into will remain open throughout the day, so there is no more logging in and out of multiple applications while the patient waits.
- The physician travels to another location and uses the same secure identity card to access the physical access control system for this location.
- Physician uses the badge to securely login to the computing resources at new location. Applications remained from the earlier session. This allows the physician to continue to see patients at the new location without re-opening applications.
Implementation
The patients think it’s the coolest thing. They see our use of the smartcards as going the extra mile to protect their data. From its inception, SETMA has prepared for the future of healthcare with technology, backed by strong security solutions. We’re confident our solutions not only meet government regulations, but far outweigh those standards, and we’re proud to be a pioneer. /Richmond Holly, Chief Informational Officer

CCAD
Case study: CCAD
Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi (CCAD), is a world-class multispecialty hospital on Al Maryah Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The hospital was designed and developed by Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala Development Company and leading US-based hospital, Cleveland Clinic, to address a range of complex and critical care requirements unique to the Abu Dhabi population.
Mubadala is helping to address the region’s most pressing healthcare needs through the creation of specialist healthcare facilities, building regional capability and stimulating the overall development of the sector.
Challenges
As a new state-of-the-art medical facility no stone was left unturned. The chief IT integrator was tasked with providing the best in class systems. With this task in mind security was of course high on the list of requirements. From a security perspective, and working with the leading players in this field, smart card technology was deemed the best and most appropriate technology to deploy. The flexibility and enhanced security elements of the smart card meant that the staff of CCAD could use the smart card as an employee badge, allowing them to use the smart card to access the hospital facilities and logically access the IT systems deployed at CCAD.
Solution
In order to maximize the benefits that smart card technology can bring, systems need to be deployed to manage these smart card devices. After evaluating the leading vendors in management applications for smart card technologies, the chief integrator selected the vSEC:CMS S-Series . This product provides the highest possible security standards for managing the smart cards, with particular benefits being around the batch issuance capabilities and the many external interfaces supported by the system. With such a large and complex environment, having the capability to interface to PKI systems, physical access systems, HR systems and SSO environments meant that the vSEC:CMS S-Series was a perfect fit.
Implementation
All successfully and complex IT system deployments have one thing in common – excellent management controls in place during the roll out. Similar practices were used in this case. The chief integrator decided upon a staged approach which allowed for lessons to be learnt and corrected at the next incremental phase. Working closely with the integrator, a dedicated test lab was setup which allowed for all systems to be tested before going live, leading to a smooth and peaceful deployment. Versasec assisted in every phase of the roll out ensuring maximum success with minimal impact on the day-to-day activities for the hospital staff.

Global Auto Manufacturer
Case study: Global Auto Manufacturer
In the ever-changing landscape of cyber security and personnel authentication, one of the most time-consuming and difficult tasks is migrating or replacing an old or end-of-life (EOL) security system. With PKI systems, this cannot be more true.
Challenges
One of the world’s leading automotive makers, was becoming increasingly concerned with the data security in its remote, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in India. The wholly owned subsidiary facility, where the auto company manufacturers its trucks, is one of just three truck plants the organization had worldwide that combine truck assembly and components production at one location, so security needed to be stepped up at the plant to curb internal and external data threats. The automotive company studied the issue and determined it would add two-factor authentication to its security mix, but needed a means for managing the system. They decided to test an affordable, two-factor identity and access management solution that could easily scale as the facility added on more workers and could be used as a blueprint for new remote manufacturing facilities.
Solution
The global automotive manufacturer turned to Versasec to deploy a solution that would help it protect its sensitive data against internal and external threats and control overall access to its systems. The auto manufacturer chose Versasec’s vSEC:CMS T-Series, an innovative, easily integrated and cost-effective Smart Card Management System (SCMS or CMS) enabling companies to manage smart cards and virtual smart cards and other two-factor devices within their organizations. T-Series is delivered on a secure USB token with the application, configuration settings and credentials residing securely on the USB token, thereby removing the requirement to invest in expensive server hardware. The vSEC:CMS T-Series is perfect for small installations – particularly those requiring fewer than 400 licenses – and has a direct upgrade path to Versasec’s enterprise IAM solution vSEC:CMS S-Series. The automotive company’s executives said they chose Versasec’ vSEC:CMS because of its excellent security capabilities, its support of the most smart cards on the market, and its ability to easily scale up with planned expansions of the facility and team in India.
Implementation
In the initial deployment, Versasec rolled out a small installation test of vSEC:CMS T-Series to demonstrate its effectiveness and provide day-one security functionality. After proving the concept, the auto manufacturer expanded the two-factor authentication project in India using vSEC:CMS. The company now holds more than 400 vSEC:CMS S-Series licenses in its India plant. The original licenses were implemented several years ago, then doubled the following year. The truck manufacturer also migrated from the vSEC:CMS T-Series to the vSEC:CMS S-Series. Over the course of the deployment, the company has enjoyed the added layer of protection that two-factor authentication provides, and believes its India manufacturing facility is now better protected from internal and external threats.
