The Stockholm Perspective: 25 Years of Trust and the Future of Versasec

Last September, I had the privilege of traveling to Stockholm to meet with Versasec’s Board Members individually. There is something about sitting across the table from the people who shaped an industry that a Zoom call simply can’t capture.

When I sat down with Sven Hammar, I wasn’t just talking to a board member; I was talking to someone who has been part of the journey. Our conversation quickly moved past the typical “board report” metrics and into a deeper narrative: one rooted in a 25-year professional partnership, strategic patience, and a very specific vision for where we are headed next.

A Partnership Built on Domain Expertise

One of the most striking things I learned during our meeting was the depth of the connection between Sven and our founder, Joakim. Their partnership began in the late 1990s, at the very dawn of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).

Sven originally hired Joakim as a consultant at his own firm, eventually bringing that expertise to the US to address security challenges for giants like GemPlus. They were implementing PKI and certificates for access control long before “cybersecurity” was a household term.

“We’ve always kept in contact,” Sven told me. “When I was free from my previous engagements, it was a natural fit to join the board.”

For me, as a marketer, this is our “secret sauce”. We aren’t a “flash in the pan” startup; we are a company built on institutional memory. While many in the tech world chase the latest trend, our leadership has seen every major evolution of the security landscape since 1999. This longevity means we aren’t just reacting to the market; we are building on decades of understanding what works, what fails, and how architectures must evolve to stay truly secure.

This depth of experience allows us to look at modern challenges, like the shift to FIDO or passwordless authentication through a unique lens. Not as brand-new problems, but as the next logical step in a journey we’ve been on for a quarter-century. It gives us a level of architectural foresight that newer players simply haven’t had the time to develop. We know legacy systems well because we were there when they were first built.

The “Inside-Outside” Perspective: Balancing Risk and Reward

I asked Sven what it’s actually like to transition from an operational leader to a board member. He described it as the “inside-outside” perspective.

He understands the “inside”: the sheer energy it takes to keep the operational gears turning. But his value now is the “outside” view: the ability to act as a strategic guardrail.

“Board members always want to expand,” Sven explained. “But there’s always a balance between cash flow and expansion. My role is to help the team navigate the risks; to know when to push and when to ensure we have the resources to sustain that push.”

This philosophy is why Versasec has been able to grow as a marathon rather than a sprint. By staying independent of the “burn fast” pressure of venture capital, we’ve maintained full control over our technology and our relationships with you, our customers.

Looking Ahead: The Shift to Verticals

Perhaps the most exciting part of our conversation was looking toward the future. We talked extensively about how we communicate our value in an increasingly complex market.

Sven’s advice was clear: Avoid the “IBM Trap.” We don’t want a 200-page website that tries to be everything to everyone. Instead, we are moving toward specialization; what we call ‘Verticalization’.”

The security needs of a defense contractor are worlds apart from those of a healthcare provider. Sven challenged me to think about how we can speak directly to those niches.

“Enterprise is never the same,” Sven noted. “You need a flexible product that can be configured. We build credibility by showing specialized proof; defense use cases, pharmaceutical landing pages, and finance-specific solutions.”

The Proof is in the Results

As I left our meeting and looked out over Stockholm, I thought about the 25 years Sven and Joakim have invested in this vision.

In an AI-driven world where anyone can claim to have the “best” technology, Sven believes, and I agree, that our credibility comes from our high-end references. We solve the most complex, demanding problems for the world’s biggest organizations.

Looking back on this 25-year professional history and sitting with Sven, I realized we have created something very special. We’ve built a foundation of trust that a startup can’t buy. While the technology world spent the last two decades chasing trends, we spent it perfecting the core of digital identity.

Today, as the world finally moves toward a passwordless, high-security future, it feels like the market has finally caught up to our vision. We have the capability of a global giant, the agility of a specialized partner, and a 25-year head start on the competition.
