Gabriela Peralta: Torvald, thank you for sitting down with us. Let’s start at the very beginning. How did you first get involved with Versasec and what convinced you to join?

Torvald Bohlin: It’s a pleasure. My journey with Versasec began when a mutual acquaintance arranged a meeting with Joakim. I admit my initial knowledge of hardware-bound authenticators was limited back then. I had just wrapped up my time as Executive Vice President at Telia Group, and this meeting came at a key transition point for me professionally.

Despite my limited knowledge in the technology, it was a combination of other powerful factors that won me over. Versasec was small, but the mission to replace passwords was audacious, and I found it absolutely fascinating. You hear a goal like that and you know there has to be a real vision behind it. More than the technology, it was the clarity of the mission and the quality of the people. For me, personal chemistry is non-negotiable, and it was clear from the start that this was a team I could build with. When you have an ambitious idea backed by the right people, the decision becomes simple. I was all in.

Gabriela: Coming from a massive telecom like Telia, what was your main focus when you joined the board of a young tech company?

Torvald Bohlin: My value wasn’t in the technology, but in strategy and execution. The challenge was clear: how do we transform this innovative concept into a thriving global business? From my experience, I know that startups often overlook the critical systems needed to scale. So my first priority was to establish those foundational processes, such as disciplined financial reporting, to build a robust structure. You have to be able to measure the health of the company to steer it effectively. That’s absolutely critical for long-term success, and of course, for investors, auditors, and certification authorities.

Gabriela: Looking back over the last 15 years, what has been a key factor in the company’s successful growth?

Torvald Bohlin: Without a doubt, it comes down to two things: our people and our adaptability. Joakim has an incredible talent for assembling A-plus teams. We have world-class leaders across the entire company. Secondly, we’ve always been committed to learning. Working with investors like Almi helped us professionalize our operations. And the interest we get from potential buyers is invaluable. Every conversation gives us market intelligence and validates that we are a major player in this space. It’s a clear signal that what we’re doing is resonating.

Gabriela: You have a unique perspective on the company’s future. What do you see ahead for Versasec?

Torvald Bohlin: The future for Versasec is exceptionally bright. We are perfectly positioned in a market that is only growing. The ultimate goal is to scale the company for its next major chapter, which often involves bringing in new shareholders through an ‘exit.’ While that strategic process has its own timeline, the key indicator is the constant inbound interest we receive. That tells me everything I need to know: our work is highly valuable, our strategy is sound, and we are exactly where we need to be. My focus is ensuring we are always prepared to capitalize on the right opportunity. That readiness is everything.

His positions have mostly been the CFO, CEO, Chairman or board-member of companies primarily in media, IT, telecommunications and financial services. Torvald has, among other positions, been the CEO and board member of Aftonbladet (media), Senior Executive VP of the Telia Group (telecom), Chairman of Com Hem (triple-play) and Eniro (search and directories), CEO and board member of Neonet (financial services) and board member of Tradedoubler (digital marketing). He has also been a boardmember of industry and employers organizations. As CEO or Chairman, he has been responsible for a number of acquisitions and divestments, capital raisings and IPOs of companies both in Sweden and abroad.
